the Exhibit

Curator Statement

The theme behind my selection is Breaking the Loop. These pieces celebrate the power of art as a catalyst for change, challenging societal norms, and breaking free from the confines of the past. An audio loop that transforms into a visual loop. A looping GIF of a skull vomiting a pixelated rainbow. Or a loop of a Fruit Roll-Up covering a mouth.

These pieces not only address the persistent cycles of oppression and stereotypes that the LGBTQIA+ community has historically faced and continues to confront today, but also break the loop, rewrite the narratives, and embark on a new journey of understanding, respect, and solidarity.

About Foodmasku

Foodmasku (AKA Antonius Oki Wiriadjaja) is an artist and activist based in New York City. Known for making and wearing masks out of food, the Foodmasku alter ego developed during the height of the pandemic in April 2020. The name is a dual-language pun; in Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese, Food - mas - ku can also mean “Food of my brother.” 

Foodmasku's work is an exploration of resilience, as he shows the importance of art for dealing with collective and personal trauma. In addition to his food mask art, Foodmasku has also created a photo series of his scars after surviving a gunshot to his stomach. He is also the creator of Delectables by foodmasku, the first generative photography project on the Ethereum blockchain.
