The Masterpiece of Tamagata

The Masterpiece of Tamagata

About
the Drop

The Masterpiece of Tamagata is a tale of love, defiance and escape. An artist paints a secret child for his wife, opening up a virtual world and putting them on a collision course with a powerful adversary.

Set in ancient Japan, this animated feature film is based on a secret story by acclaimed author Betty Misheiker. 60 years in the making, it was too dangerous to be released when it was first written. Today, it can finally be brought to life by artist Ilona Suschitzky (Misheiker’s daughter), Director/Producer Leo Crane and a noteworthy creative team.

The Tamagata Collection is a series of digital artworks derived from the film’s striking design, combining ink paintings, digital drawings, film and an orchestral score. Minted as NFTs, these artworks record the evolution of the project as we progress through the production phase.

The project began in 2019 with funding from Arts Council England and generous private investors. By collecting Tamagata NFTs, you are invited to join us as we complete the funding, produce the animation and release the film. Every Tamagata NFT supports independent cinema and the #film3 movement.

About

Leo Crane's work merges physical and digital media to explore our relationship with technology. By combining traditional artistic disciplines with advanced computer training, he investigates what it is to be human in the web3 age. For the 12 years, he has been developing a body of work including animated films, gallery installations, and the first ever live opera NFT. He has been widely exhibited, screened, performed and published, from the V&A and British Library in London to 40ft-high projections in Paris and film festivals across the world.

Leo runs the London-based studio Figuration and teaches at Sotheby's Institute of Art, V&A Academy, British Library and the Heatherley School of Art. He holds MA (Distinction) in Computer Animation from Bournemouth and MA (Hons) in Classics from Oxford University. He studied painting with Maggi Hambling CBE and is the author of Contemporary Figures in Watercolour (Batsford Books, 2021).
