It first appeared in the year 3086.

And despite every effort made by humanity, we know as much about it now as we did then: almost nothing.

It orbits New Earth at an impossibly low altitude at a speed of 3141 kilometers per hour. Most scientists agree that it is not orbiting at all but flying or being flown, 'though no means of propulsion has been observed.

It is 941 centimeters in diameter; perfectly spherical and perfectly reflective.

And every attempt to interfere with it in any way has failed.

It flies on and on, perpetually, but it does nothing. It has been so long now that it has been all but forgotten by most of the planet's population. Even the very few scientists who still routinely check up on it do so without much interest.

But all this is about to change... Or, actually, probably it isn't. It might be that I'm just completely mad, and even if not, nobody will take me seriously: The Monosphere spoke to me today.

I heard it inside my head... Shapeless idea-thoughts, rather than words, floating in my mind... It told me its true nature, and my own as well. It said it isn't real, nor am I, nor anyone or anything in this universe. It said it (and we) only exists as a piece of art in another universe, made by an artist who also questions how "real" his own universe is and whether it even matters one way or the other.

I totally love this. Clearly constructed by an avid reader of SciFi. I got so engrossed in the full description that I thought I was going to read an epic SciFi novel in the making- YOU must write an ending- it would be a real winner.

Thank you so much, I really am very grateful. As for an ending, it takes a true Artist like yourself to envisage such realms and alternative dimensions. Sadly for me, I don't have that scope of thinking power and wouldn't even get off the ground :)

Hi Peter! Thank you so much ^-^ .. Indeed, I do love my sci-fi .. 'Would love to get back to reading more of it though! My Goodreads acc. is always sending me some very enticing suggestions.

As for this story - the first edition is yours already ;) (just waiting for MP to process it) .. so perhaps you could come up with an interesting ending? =)

Reminds me a lot of an anime, 'Kado:The Right Answer'--only it's a hypercube type deal. Also reminds me of Romanesco Broccoli...

How nice to have our own monosphere or do we have it? A new unknown to discover. Beautiful Jody

Like the infinitely repeating images in a room full of mirrors, life inside life inside life. I love this world floating over another, all green and blue, and the trip you’ve taken us on. Magical as always!

That would be a never ending thing ...the artist being an art of another artist in another universe and so on it goes.. I love the green hues and the reflective surface of the ball.. it as if everything is truely a reflection of someone elses thoughts..
