Every artist / writer / creative-maker-type hears this whenever they neglect their work for a few hours and slide into public for an evening... Creating can be a tough gig, in some circumstances---hours alone at the keyboard or canvas or notebook, not wanting to stop until you get this one part right...
But you HAVE to take a break every now and then. You HAVE to recharge, reconnect with humanity---at least with a few people---or you lose perspective and start to go all Howard Hughes...
I appreciate online connectivity (even if it isn't a 100% substitute for face-to-face interaction), and I especially love collaborative projects, like DADA.nyc, where people respond to each other's drawings with more drawings. The internet has taken over, for me, for what POSTAL-ART used to be---a way to connect and interact with other creative folks, even though I live in a little, conservative, less than "creative friendly" logging town... I can still get feedback---but only if I take a break once in a while and SHARE what I've been working on!
Being a lonely genius (or, as in my case, a lonely not-a-genius) banging away in isolation is PART of the gig, no doubt---especially for a writer / artist combo type, like I am. As much as I WANT to hang with the humans---I can't write while I'm talking politics or visiting a family member. It feels rude to be mixing colors or focusing on drawing that perfect scratchy, awkward line, while someone is asking me my opinion on this movie or that new band. So I've been trying, lately, to get OUT THERE into the "REAL WORLD" from time to time. Putting the paint-brushes down (after you clean them... You don't want to have to throw away ANOTHER batch of brushes because the acrylic dried in the bristles...) and going to have a coffee or see a movie. Taking a walk. Making a phone-call to my Grandma. Checking in on that new baby that my older daughter just had (about five days ago!!!) I've been TRYING to BREATHE, let personal interactions and time OUT THERE influence my perspective. I'm trying to be SEEN a bit more. (And I think I'm succeeding, even if I'm sitting alone TODAY while the rest of the family is gathered together having a good time. I still have to get SOME work done, as well. It's a balancing act...)
Don't let "Haven't seen you much lately...," be the first thing that everyone says to you every time you go outside!
My two tender discs...
