The light being is inside this labyrinth house of stairs and doorways looking for a glowing orb of hope and enlightenment, but no matter where he goes, there is a shadow on the roof that he isn't aware of. The shadow is in a mirror because it represents the essence of what the light being thinks that he isn't, and the light being isn't looking into the mirror because he denies all of who he is in a false search for enlightenment. The second orb above the water that isn't glowing is only reflecting the environment around it - a visual explanation that people are not just their personality and physical body, but everything else as well. The light orb is above the reflective orb in the artwork because to the light being, enlightenment as an idea is of the higher self; he can't recognize what the reflective orb means because it involves the reflection of the shadow self, making him think that the environment around him is of the lower self and external to himself. In the story of the light being attempting to find enlightenment and the purpose of life, he will chase a false hope for a better tomorrow while not recognizing that the future that he wanted was the one he was already living.
The shadow is the unknown "dark side" of our personality — dark both because it predominantly consists of depreciated human emotions and impulses, and because, due to its unenlightened nature, it is completely obscured from consciousness. Whatever we deem evil, inferior, or unacceptable and deny in ourselves becomes part of the shadow, the counterpoint to what Carl Jung, a celebrated psychiatrist, called the persona or conscious ego-personality.
