Emojis were originally silhouettes only, the simplest but convincing way to represent objects in documents. Apple still maintains a small library. Considered alone, each is banal, but when they are added together, turned or scaled and added to other emojis that banality comes to new meaning, which can be mystery, avarice, allure, rage, anonymity… to name a few.. The emoji loses it’s original function but in its service to the larger gestalt, retains a minute but palpable contribution to the overall story. Different that if one drew a picture of a spaceship, or person, or nothing at all, just a blob, the emoji assemblage carries a kind of seduction and draws on thehuman need to decipher, to puzzle.
