Icebergs are a serious fascination for me. Each one different, carved by time and warming cooling water. Each year they change - position, form, shape and orientation- they flip and turn in the water and can travel thousands of kilometers. Each having their own unique character.

We had travelled over 200km (125 miles) and at speeds below 10km an hour (6 MpH) it was a long journey from Davis station to the Rauer Islands. The trip was fraught with difficulty- but the reward was incredible landscapes at the edge of the plateau to the North West of our station.

I took this photo lying on my back peering towards the sky through voids formed in a huge iceberg off the coast of Princess Elizabeth Land- near the Rauer's Islands in Antarctica. It felt like the berg had been through some stuff- it had lots of melted holes and caves of all different sizes. The light through it was amazing. Parts of the iceberg were clearly thinner, and the shades of blue looked illuminated in the afternoon light- lit up in all different shades of turquoise and blue.

I spent hours looking at different angles, through different voids marvelling at the slick ice scapes formed in the gnarled corners of some of the bergs. What always struck me was that I was one of a handful of people on earth who would ever see that place, that angle- the following year that iceberg was likely a long way from the edge of the continent, moved and reformed by winds and ocean currents to wherever it now lies, changed through it's lifetime- standing unchanged for only a moment before it's journey continues in all it's different shades.
