I love her name - it has this delicate , dark, velvet feel to it. She is also in a beloved poem and a song - one that speaks of an unspoken connection between two individuals that is untainted by social prejudice. It is a well loved song - my mom would sing it around the house .. and I can heard too from time to time trying to sing :). At times I feel - is it really a girl that is being referred to here or the dark velvet monsoon clouds that I have seen over the green paddy fields... anyway here is the translation:
---------------------------------------
I call her Krishnokoli - the girl whom the folks call dark
I saw her in the green meadow , dark girl with dark doe eyes.
Unveiled with her open locks of hair flowing down her back
Dark? very well dark she may be, but all I saw was her dark doe eyes.
Gazing at the darkening cloud, the buffaloes lowed
From her hut she rushing out full of woe
Listening to the thundering cloud, glancing at the sky
Dark? very well dark she may be, but all I saw was her dark doe eyes.
The eastern wind came chasing, making the paddy sway
Standing on the meadow-skirts it was just me and her...
Did see look at me ? The knowledge lives within our hearts..
Dark? very well dark she may be, but all I saw was her dark doe eyes.
Thus gathers rain clouds in summer months in the north-eastern corner
Thus draws the dark soft shadow of rainy months over the Tamal trees
Thus fills heart on monsoon's eve with a sudden gush of gaiety
Dark? very well dark she may be, but all I saw was her dark doe eyes.
I call her Krishnokali, whatever others may call her by
At the meadows of Moynapara, I saw the dark girl's dark doe eyes.
Unveiled, she had no time to feel shy
Dark? very well dark she may be, but all I saw was her dark doe eyes.
