Imagine your first trip out through antarctic icebergs. The air is cold and crisp, the ground underfoot crunches with snow on the sea ice and the golden light is quiet in the late of the afternoon. The only sound is the rustle of your thick jacket against your face, and the soft hush of wind winding through icebergs. Your eyes are already full of awe. And then - you spot them. Little black dots, a bunch of them, at the back end of a clearing between bergs.
Adélie penguins are curious creatures. If you sit yourself low, and stay fairly still- they’ll wander huge distances to check you out. They don’t associate humans with danger like most other animals. They will make their way within a few meters of you, just to pull up to cast an inquisitive eye.
This afternoon, it was tough to contain my excitement of just being there. And then it happened….
Old mate hit a patch of slippery ice… You could see the panic on his face as he slipped. It was less than graceful. (Who knew you could read panic on a birds face?). His mates didn’t offer much support. It felt like maybe they were taunting him, but then maybe this lad was just known to be uncoordinated.
One thing really resonated with me in this moment. I’m not a super coordinated human most days. If these creatures, designed to travel on ice, can spend time slipping, sliding and falling over- well! I’m completely vindicated for the amount of time I spent tripping, landing on my backside on the ice.
I think Adelie Penguins are my favourites. They’re little clowns, full of so much personality. Their simple presence could bring a smile to my face even when I was at my most homesick, or isolated, or challenged by life in Antarctica. I’m a huge fan. I hope you will be too.
