I spent hours. Literally hours- lying on my belly staring down through the frozen fresh water lakes around Davis Station in Antarctica. As the water freezes, any bubbles are captured, as if frozen in time, as they attempt their ascent towards freedom.

It sounds melodramatic, but that's the way I always thought of it. Over time the surface of the lake may crack, or be blown by wind before they were fully frozen, giving them texture that couldn't be replicated beyond nature. Lakes around the Vestfold Hills in Antarctica were unique, many of them formed by the cycle of thaw and freeze of run off from the Antarctic Ice Plateau.

Pure fresh water freezes clear. Unlike milky sea ice, the surface is slick and unforgiving. Without salt, there is no friction, nothing to grip to. Walking over these lakes is nearly impossible without boot chains and your wits about you. The clear ice offers up an unexpected benefit. The lakebed surface is clear, almost magnified by the ice above- making it feel like you're peering through glass, with bubbles. With each step a new pattern. And a new snapshot into the geology and history of the landscape. Each bubble, the small part of the continent that isn't covered by ice, breathing out.
