Head split in three and eyes that pierce the soul, this once-forgotten relic of a bygone era is painted with such lifelike realism that anyone whose gaze happens to land on it is given the feeling that they are the one being looked at and observed. The warm light spills in as if from a performance stage, the puppet standing off to the side waiting for his cue that may never come again. The twisted smirk on the puppet gives us the sense that not only is he in on the joke but knows that a soon-to-be-forgotten future awaits us all. Stunning and dark, this painting is the second and seminal work in Greg Hildebrandt’s Kids Stuff series.
