In Mesopotamian mythology, Tammuz (also known as Dumuzi or Damuzid) was a god of fertility, new birth, and spring seasons. He was associated with the goddess Inanna who eventually went into a state of hubris. Tammuz was mentioned in the Bible as a "false god" worshipped and even mourned by women in the book of Ezekiel. God called out the people who bowed before Tammuz as they practice their idolatrous ways. Some accounts claim that it was Tammuz who inspired the concept of "death and resurrection" of Jesus, but scholars point out that this idea is too common in ancient religions that one cannot verify such theory.
