In Philippine mythology, Abra is an ancient god who controls the weather. He is married to a well-known goddess named Makiling who resides in mountainous regions of Southern Luzon. The extent of Abra’s power is unknown due to lack of existing literature, but based on current texts, unlike other gods, he is not described as a “storm god” but more of a neutral god who can command the weather system as a whole. Philippine mythology mentions many gods who specifically control wind, rain, or lightning, but Abra is different. Storm gods simply cause “storms”, but Abra can possibly cause different kinds of storms. By this theory, he can even cause snowfall or ice storms—weather conditions that are very foreign to a tropical country. Any kind of deity associated with winter or cold does not exist in Philippine mythology, so it is fair to say that Abra is the closest god to make it happen.
