Goldenfield served as a member of the Blood Axe Mercenary Company aboard the Dark Duchess, a pirate ship from Luskan. Stuck in the Sea Of Moving Ice, the ship became a virtual “cannibal barge” with Goldenfield emerging as the only survivor. Wracked with guilt, he roamed the icy wastes alone as a drifter, fighting in two bit rural gladiator battles and getting occasional work using his brawn to lift and carry goods. But each short stay always ends in bloody drunken bar fights, a few more scars, and a little more shame.

In the freezing wastes of Icewind Dale, he found some dignity among a group of adventurers combating the evil designs of the Frostmaiden. He was even made a martial deputy in the Ten Towns area, using his considerable might to confront the many dangers of the North. But his old habits returned and he wandered aimlessly South, looking to fight, drink or die as soon as possible, in hopes of silencing the hornets nest of voices in his troubled brain. And then he met The Black Feather.

When he stumbled across her war party in a rocky arroyo he slew many of her soldiers, and was cornered and bleeding when she approached. He was mesmerized, and for the first time in his life genuinely afraid. She gently touched his bloody horns, kissed his cheek, and presented him with a powerful magical hammer, ‘Obstrepera,’ whispering, “Follow me.” In what could only be described as a religious conversion (or perhaps the influence of a sorcerer’s spell), he became her most faithful, devoted disciple. At last he had clarity of purpose in this newfound rapture, and peace of mind in his overwhelming love for The Black Feather. He is her sworn bodyguard and most adoring acolyte. Leaving behind the drunken chaos of his former life, he is reborn as The Black Feather’s mad bull war hammer.
