Part of 'greenwise' series attempting to illustrate evolutionary forces or interactions.
Elements include: symbol for growth in centre, turning sails of death influencing the forms and flame of life, humankind tendency towards complexity (provided environmental conditions and our capacity to adapt allow for this), Charles Darwin's original outlines of 'tree of life', personal symbols highlighting the need for greater awareness of our interconnection with other species.
Evolution forces change but only where the ring of environment changes. It can also force species to devolve and lose characteristics previously favored, hence expansion and contraction. Evolution in this way is also merciless as it is inexorable. Our basic existence is part of process: to carry energy, to nourish the earth and continue life's ripple in an ocean of time. Is this meaning? It just is.

This piece also contains lines from 'Drinking Song' by Thomas Hardy:
'We are all one with creeping things;
And apes and men
Blood-brethren'

Revisited piece for a first moving edition, 2020.

updated notes:
Elements include: symbol for growth in the centre, turning sails of death influencing the forms and flame of life, tributes to Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species' including original outlines of the 'tree of life', the mandlebrot fractal symbol, personal symbols highlighting the need for greater awareness, and of our interconnection with other species... etc...

Evolution forces change but only where the outer ring of environment changes. It can also force species to devolve and lose characteristics previously favored, hence expansion and contraction. Evolution in this way is also merciless as it is inexorable. Our basic existence is part of process: to burn up and reproduce energy, to nourish the earth and continue life's ripple in an ocean of time. Living and dying, weak and strong all play their part in shaping the next generation. Is this meaning? It just is.

Evolution and change also changes language, culture, behavior, genetics... we have 'succeeded' you might say as a species, by communication and collaboration, by managing resources, and controlling other species. But by leaving one habitat have we yet found sustainable harmony with the alternatives? And despite space exploration we will forever be dependent on the health of our home planet. If its balance is set to change, then so will we... drawn each of us toward the light of the sun.
